How to fake a Strava run or walk on iPhone using a Mac

GPS activities follow the location your phone reports, so those you can move. Step counts come from a motion chip nobody can talk to. Here is the line.

A Strava run is a GPS track. The app records where your phone says it is, at intervals, and everything else on the activity page is arithmetic on top of that: distance, pace, elevation, splits. Move the location your iPhone reports along a route and Strava records that route.

Step counts are a different animal, and this is where most guides start lying to you. Read the next section before you buy anything, because it decides whether this tool does what you actually want.

GhostMe changes the location iOS reports. It does not synthesise accelerometer or pedometer data, so a step count that comes off the motion chip is not something it fabricates. What you need

  • A Mac. This does not run on the iPhone alone.
  • A USB cable for the first pairing, then Wi-Fi on the same network.
  • Developer Mode on the iPhone: Settings, Privacy & Security, Developer Mode, on, then restart.

No jailbreak, no VPN, no profile installed on the phone. GhostMe uses Apple’s own Mac-to-iPhone developer connection, which is why the Mac is required and why nothing on the phone has to be modified.

Recording the activity

  1. Connect the iPhone to the Mac, unlock it, tap Trust.
  2. In GhostMe, plan the route: a start point, a destination, and walking or driving as the mode.
  3. Choose the playback speed. This is the part that decides whether the result is plausible.
  4. Start Strava recording on the phone, then start the route in GhostMe.
  5. Stop both when the route finishes and save the activity.

Start the recording first. Strava takes a moment to acquire a position, and a run that begins with a two-hundred-metre jump because the route was already moving looks exactly like what it is.

Pace is the thing that gives it away

Every implausible fake activity fails on the same axis. Somebody plays a driving route back at driving speed and posts a 10K in eleven minutes.

Rough numbers worth keeping in your head:

  • A brisk walk is around 5 to 6 km/h.
  • An easy run is around 9 to 11 km/h.
  • A fast recreational runner is around 13 to 15 km/h.
  • Anything past 20 km/h is not a person, it is a bicycle at best.

Use the walking route mode for runs and walks, and set playback so the total time matches something a human would produce. If the route is 5 km and it completes in twelve minutes, that is a 2:24 per kilometre pace, which is faster than the world record and will be noticed by anyone who glances at it.

The other realism details

Real GPS tracks wobble. They pause at traffic lights. Splits vary between kilometres because people slow down. A perfectly even pace across a route with three hills in it is a signature. Route choice matters too: a run that goes straight through a lake or down a motorway is not the route giving it away, it is the map.

Elevation, and the other derived numbers

Elevation gain on most phone-recorded activities is derived from the route against terrain data rather than measured directly, so a hilly route produces hilly numbers. Heart rate does not, because it comes from a strap or a watch, and an activity with a plausible pace and no heart rate attached is simply an activity recorded without a heart rate monitor, which is extremely common.

The honest limits

GhostMe changes the location iOS reports. What Strava, or any other platform, does with an activity built from that is their call. Strava has its own review processes and community flagging, particularly on segment leaderboards and anything competitive. Nobody can promise you an activity will be accepted, and it is not a tool that defeats fraud or safety systems.

Also worth knowing: activities recorded from an Apple Watch use the watch’s sensors, not the phone’s reported location, so this changes nothing there.

Turning it off

Stop & Restore Location, or restart the iPhone, and real GPS returns. Nothing is left behind on the phone. Worth doing before your next real run, or your next actual activity starts at a coordinate in a city you are not in.

Common questions

Can I fake step counts on an iPhone?

Not with this. Steps come from the motion coprocessor, which is a sealed sensor path with no interface for writing values into it. Anything claiming otherwise on iOS is either writing into Apple Health manually, which is visible as a manual entry, or not doing what it says.

Does this work for Nike Run Club, MapMyRun, or Garmin Connect?

Any app recording a GPS track from the phone follows the reported location, so the mechanism is the same. Apps recording from a watch or a chest strap do not.

Do I need to jailbreak my iPhone?
