How to change where you appear on Snapchat’s Snap Map

Start with the free answer, because for most people it is the right one. Ghost Mode hides you from Snap Map completely, it is built into Snapchat, and it takes four taps. Open the Map, tap the settings gear, turn on Ghost Mode. Your Bitmoji disappears from everyone’s map and you can still see theirs.

The reason people keep searching past that is that Ghost Mode is conspicuous. Friends notice when your avatar vanishes, and in some group chats that is its own small event. If you would rather appear somewhere than appear nowhere, you have to change what the iPhone reports, and that needs a Mac.

What Snap Map is showing

Your location updates when you open Snapchat. Not continuously, not in the background: when the app is open. Close it and your Bitmoji stays put at the last known spot with a timestamp attached, and after a few hours you drop off the map on your own.

Two options sit between full visibility and Ghost Mode, and both are free.

• My Friends, Except… lets you hide from specific people while staying visible to the rest. This is the setting most people actually want and most people have never opened.
• Only These Friends… flips it, so you are visible to a short list and invisible to everyone else.

Or the map on someone else’s phone is showing them a cached avatar, which resolves when they pull to refresh.

Check your own map first. Whatever you see there is what everyone else is getting, and if your own avatar has moved then the job is done regardless of what a friend reports.

What friends can still see

Snap Map stamps every avatar with how long ago it updated. A Bitmoji that says two minutes ago and has not moved all night reads differently from one that says four hours ago. If you are covering a long stretch, run a short walking route rather than a fixed pin so the position drifts the way a real one does.

Snaps posted to Our Story can carry location too, and Snapchat has its own signals about where content came from. Plainly: GhostMe changes the location iOS reports, and what any individual app concludes from that is up to the app. It does not defeat safety or fraud systems.

Which problem do you actually have

Worth being specific, because the three common situations have three different answers and only one of them needs a Mac.

Going back
