Set up Developer Mode for location testing

Developer Mode is a visible, opt-in iPhone setting. Pairing and device preparation matter just as much as the switch itself.

What you need

  • A Mac running macOS 15 Sequoia or later.
  • Xcode 16 or later installed and opened at least once.
  • An iPhone or iPad you are authorized to use for development.
  • A data-capable USB cable for the first pairing.

Connect, unlock, and trust

  1. Connect the device to the Mac over USB and unlock it.
  2. Accept Trust This Computer on the device and enter its passcode.
  3. Open Xcode and wait while it prepares the device for development.
  4. Keep both devices awake until Xcode reports the phone as available.

A charge-only cable can make the phone appear to charge without ever becoming available to developer tools. If nothing appears, swap the cable and connect directly to the Mac before troubleshooting software.

Enable Developer Mode on iPhone

Open Settings on the iPhone, then Privacy & Security and Developer Mode. Turn it on, restart when iOS asks, unlock after the restart, and confirm the second prompt. Apple makes the restart and confirmation explicit because Developer Mode expands what a trusted development Mac can do.

If the Developer Mode row is missing, reconnect to Xcode and let device preparation finish. The option may not appear until the phone has been paired for development.

Verify readiness in GhostMe

Open GhostMe and refresh Connected Devices. A ready device shows as connected with Developer Mode enabled and location simulation available. Select the intended iPhone before starting a route, especially when several test devices are paired with the Mac.

Wi-Fi connections can work after USB pairing, but USB is easier to diagnose and less likely to disappear during a long route. Establish a clean wired run before adding wireless variables to the test.

Common setup fixes

  • Device unavailable: unlock it, keep the screen awake, and reopen Xcode.
  • Developer Mode off: confirm the post-restart prompt, not only the first toggle.
  • Pairing stale: disconnect, reconnect over USB, and accept trust again if iOS asks.
  • Simulation unsupported: update Xcode so its device support matches the iOS version.

Run a small first test

Start with an instant location a few blocks away, verify the phone moves, then press Stop & Restore Location. That proves pairing, permission, and cleanup before a longer route adds timing and map geometry. Continue with the route simulation guide.
